Camping at Heritage Reservation; Summer 2011 !

About Heritage:http://www.heritagereservation.org/independence/index.php

Hi. Knowing that it is a long way off and there is some snow that needs to melt before we get to next summer, we are at the time of year when we reserve space for summer camping at Heritage Reservation!

With a camping presentation slated for a future pack meeting, at this time we just need to pick a session so that we can reserve a campsite.

The following form will collect your first/second/third preference for a camping session. We ask that those who hope/plan to go to Heritage fill this out.

While it isn't a committment, please submit the form only if you are fairly serious in your intent.

Pack 661 Communications

Folks - My apologies. I will be the new "Communications Person" for the pack and it appears I've dropped the ball in a big way this past month (didn't pick a good month to transition into the position!). I'm working to figure this process out - but I can assure you I will now be checking Pack emails on a regular basis. Your patience is appreciated.

This is just a note to let you know I've removed all the events from the calendar related to our Webelo IIs that crossed over at the last Blue and Gold, so if you're in this group and were relying on the calendar, then stop doing that!

This weekend; Playground Cleanup and Scouting for Food

Hi.
Knowing that you are looking for something to do this weekend...

Saturday morning 4/24
9am - (usually done by 11am/noonish)
Westminster Playground Cleanup
The more people come, the faster the cleanup goes! And yes, we still need help, so please come.
This is our 3rd year providing this service to "give back" to Westminster for hosting our Pack...
The Church also has their rummage sale at this same time; if the weather allows, uniforms would be great!
If you have any of the following, please bring them (put your name on to be sure...)
>> leaf blower, work gloves, rakes, brooms and dustpans

Sunday morning 4/25
Westminster Church Services
Scouting for Food
Those who did neighborhood collections can bring them to:
{Following note from our Scouting for Food Coordinator}
On Sunday April 18th I had the pleasure of watching the reaction of the parishioners towards the Scouts that participated in Scouting for Food. They loved to see the boys in their uniforms and many commented on how nice and well behaved the boys were. There were also many comments on how great it is to have the Scouts at the church, and that they are working for such a worthy cause. We were able to pass out several hundred bags at the three services.

Since we passed out so many bags on Sunday, I am calling out to the entire pack for help on Sunday April 25th. We need boys to help collect, shuttle, and sort the food. I expect to have a lot of food to sort and box so the more help the better. If you can help even for just one of the three services it would be most appreciated. I have listed the times below.

9:15am need at least 6 boys
10:30am need at least 8 boys
11:45am need at least 10 boys

A very big THANK YOU to the 5 Scouts that helped pass out Scouting for Food bags at the church Sunday April 18th, you did a great job.

Scouting for Food

Hello -
I am Celia V., and I am the Scouting for Food Coordinator this year for Cub Scout Pack 661. I have been coordinating with Westminster Presbyterian Church and Keith, to include their members in our Scouting for Food drive this year. We have been given permission to pass out Scouting for Food bags after the services on 18 April and to collect the contributions of food from the church members before services on 25 April. This is a great opportunity to receive some visibility for the Pack as a group of young men who provide service to others and the community.

Below are a list of times for passing out and collecting food bags. Since our camp out got cancelled I would like to see as many volunteers at possible for both of the Sundays.

April 18th -- Distribution of Food Bags (Cubs will be in uniform and will hand out bags to the parish members after services.)
April 25th – Collection of Food from parish members before services. Sorting will take place in the entrance of Fellowship hall. Where we had Blue and Gold.

9:15am

10:30am

11:45am

Scouting for Food information

April is Scouting for Food month!

This annual, and national, food drive benefits local food banks.

All food collected by Pack 661 goes directly to SHIM - South Hills Interfaith Ministries (www.shim-center.org).

We support this worthy cause through 2 mechanisms:

1) In Our Neighborhoods.
Bags were handed out at the March Pack Meeting. Cubs can deliver these to neighbors at any time and choose when to pick them up. A sample flyer to attach to the bags is here: https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B5k0hBI_aOFRNWFmZGExNjktNjczOC00NWJhLTlkZjktNGJlNjk4MjVlZjFj&hl=en
Collected food can be delivered to Westminster on Sunday morning, April 25.

2) At Westminster Presbyterian Church
Complementing food drives already in place at Westminster, Cubs will hand out bags at services on Sunday April 18.
The following week, on Sunday April 25, Cubs will again be present to collect the donations from members of the Church.

** If you need bags for your neighborhood, please contact cubscouts661@verizon.net
** Cubs are still needed for the Church on both the 18th and 25th (cubscouts661@verizon.net)

A few requests have been made for the caterer's name and number; contact cubscouts661@verizon.net if interested and we'll get that to you.

Scouting for Food
We need folks to distribute bags at Westminster services on Sunday April 18 and to collect on Sunday April 25.

So far, two people have signed up to help; please check your calendar for that Saturday morning for a couple of hours and let cubscouts661@verizon.net know...

Communications
I heard this weekend that some folks are not aware that we have a Pack Website. As messages are posted on the site (http://cubscouts661.blogspot.com/), an e-mail is sent to you. All prior postings and events are on the site.

On that note, we are in need of someone to take care of posting information on the site/e-mail...check out http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AZk0hBI_aOFRZG03NGtjdl81MGRyNjZ3bWNy&hl=en and contact cubscouts661@verizon.net

A personal note from Jeff
A huge Thank You for your remarks, comments, cards and gifts! I am so appreciative of your sentiments and generousity! Credit for the Pack's growth and maturity goes to your Den Leaders and other adults who have made this program "go." For my part, I was just one of a group of people (including Keith) who came together five years ago to move the Pack to Westminster Church and to re-engage. Others have joined in over the past few years; We each took action to ensure that a good solid Scouting program would be there for our children; to provide a good avenue for their growth socially, to learn respect, outdoor activities, healthy living, character, - all of which ultimately, is why we do this, isn't it...
Thank You. ~Jeffrey

Around the Pack
It's always good to see Scouts out and about in the community. Last weekend, one of the local Rotary clubs held their annual pancake breakfast at Westminster Presbyterian Church. While many groups help (including Boy Scout Troop 366), special recognition goes out to our Cubs from Pack 661 who were also there lending a helping hand. Webelos Michael D. and Jimmy W. along with Wolf Nathan H did an excellent job hauling dishes, syrup, drinks and more!

Do you have other news of scouts in action? Send them along to cubscouts661@verizon.net!

Each spring, we have a service project where we clean up the playground at Westminster. The date hasn't been set for this (want to make sure the snow is REALLY gone!) - stay tuned!

Call for Help; Heritage Reservation Independence Dining Hall

Hi.
Following is a message that we've been asked to send along from the Greater Pittsburgh Council:

THIS IS A CALL FOR HELP
YOU HAVE ALL HEARD BY NOW ABOUT THE COLLAPSE OF THE CAMP INDEPENDENCE DINING HALL (http://www.heritagereservation.org/) . THE COUNCIL'S INSURANCE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ON SITE, AND TODAY, THEY SENT IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING PEOPLE TO SURVEY THE BUILDING.

IT IS PRETTY MUCH A LOSS.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY, OUR CONTRACTOR WILL BE ON SITE, TO KNOCK DOWN WALLS, AND SCOOP THE CEILING OUT OF THE STRUCTURE, AND GIVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEMPT ANY SALVAGE. THE CONTRACTOR WILL ALSO BE ON SITE WITH US ON SATURDAY, TO INSURE THAT NOTHING UNSAFE WILL BE ATTEMPTED.

WE ARE DEVELOPING A TEAM OF ABOUT 40+ ADULT VOLUNTEERS (18 AND OLDER) WHO CAN MOBILIZE THIS SATURDAY.

OUR MISSION WILL BE TO SAFELY ENTER THE STRUCTURE, RETRIEVE ANY TABLES, BENCHES, JAMBOREE GEAR, OR OTHER ITEMS THAT MAY BE REASONABLE TO SALVAGE.

ALL ITEMS WILL BE PUT ON TRUCKS AND TAKEN TO TRAILERS, OR THE INFIRMARY TO BE DRIED OUT AND INVENTORIED.

THIS IS A CRITICAL DAY FOR THE JAMBOREE CONTINGENT……AND A VERY IMPORTANT DAY TOWARDS PREPARING INDEPENDENCE TO GET BACK ON IT’S FEET FOR THE SUMMER.

WE NEED WORKERS….

THERE IS STILL SNOW IN CAMP. LATE TODAY, THE DINING HALL WAS STILL AT THE 3 FT LEVEL, HOWEVER, IT IS MELTING QUICKLY, AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT HAS CLEARED ROADS FOR US TO SAFELY MANEUVER.

YOU WILL NEED TO DRESS ACCORDINGLY. IT IS STILL COLD, YET TODAY, THEY WERE RUNNING AROUND IN T SHIRTS. YOU MIGHT NEED RAIN GEAR. WEAR WORK TYPE SHOES, BRING EXTRA CLOTHES, AND DON’T FORGET GLOVES.

WE WILL BE USING CAMP TRUCKS TO MOVE THE GEAR, BUT IF YOU HAVE A LARGE PICK UP OR TRUCK/TRAILER, IT WOULD BE HELPFUL.

WE NEED TO COMPLETE THIS TASK BEFORE ALL INSIDE IS RUINED BY THE WEATHER.
WE WILL HAVE COFFEE AND ICE TEA PREPARED. ALL ARE ASKED TO BRING SNACKS FOR THE DAY, AND A SACK LUNCH.

Webelos II News and Meeting Changes

Below is a note from Clay about the transition of Webelos II to Boy Scouts. The calendar has been updated for meeting changes, but please read all the news.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Starting Tuesday February 23rd the boys will start their transition to Boy Scouts by attending the Troop 366 Boy Scout meeting in room 107 Westminster Church from 7:30 to 9:00. Boy Scout meetings are every Tuesday in this room. For the boys moving on to Boy Scouts they should start attending these weekly meetings. If your son is not sure about joining Boy Scouts at least have them attend a couple meetings and a few scout activities. Boy Scouts is a lot more action oriented then Webelos.

Prior to the official cross over in April (Blue Gold Banquet on April 9th and Webelos Woods Cross over and campout on April 10 & 11), Keith and I will work with the boys at the Boy Scout meetings to finish up any remaining Arrow of Light requirements. Also, we will still participate in the pinewood derby so get those cars ready!

How Pittsburgh Scouts Can Assist Haitian Relief Efforts

A message from the Boy Scouts of America...
{Please contact cubscouts661@verizon.net if interested in coordinating or participating}

While our hearts and prayers go out to the people of Haiti, as Scouts who are always ready to lend a helping hand, our minds wonder what can I do to help?

Rescue efforts are currently underway by professionals trained in disasters. The immediate need is for emergency supplies that have to be purchased. The Boy Scouts of America is partnered with the American Red Cross (WWW.redcross.org) and locally the Greater Pittsburgh Council is partnered with the Brothers Brother Foundation (WWW.brothersbrother.org) for cash donations.

How can our unit help immediately?

Until the end of February, Scout units are encouraged to collect items for "Care Buckets" that will be shipped to Haiti. Scouting has partnered with the Brothers Brother Foundation because of their ability to deliver the buckets to Haiti in addition to their ethical reputation and strong track record with international relief efforts.

A flier (
http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B5k0hBI_aOFRN2E1MTUxOTgtNjZkNC00NmE3LTljNGYtMjFjMWE5ZTFkMDZl&hl=en) describes the items to be collected along with suggested collection methods and information on where to deliver the filled buckets.

This project ends on February 26 so start NOW!

How your unit can help in the future...
Donations to the World Friendship Fund can be designated to help the Scouts in Haiti with long term rebuilding projects. Please consider asking for contributions during your Blue & Gold banquets, Courts of Honor, leader meetings, roundtables, Klondike derbies or other Scouting events.

As it becomes available, information will continue to be posted on the Council website (http://WWW.gpc-bsa.org) on ways Scouting can help with the relief efforts. We are in the preliminary planning stages of allocating some of the Scouting for Food collections to the people of Haiti. This would require a huge effort by all Scouts to redouble our collection efforts and set new records for food donations!
