Flag Retirement Ceremony & Community Day Wrap-up

Flag Retirement Ceremony
Thursday June 9 1pm South Park

A special message:
Allegheny County Council Members invite Boy Scout Troops from the South Hills area to attend the 2011 Flag Retirement Ceremony on Thursday, June 9th, at 1:00 p.m. at South Park’s Flag Retirement Plaza located behind the Children’s Theatre in South Park.

The ceremony’s agenda will mirror last year’s event, running from 30 to 45 minutes and including speeches from elected officials, performances by vocalists and instrumentalists, and a presentation of flags. We invite scouts to participate in the event; they may be utilized to prepare and execute the ceremony (i.e. raising flags on flag poles, presenting flags to be retired, escorting disabled veterans to seats, handing out programs, etc.).

We request that those interested in participating please RSVP to cubscouts661@verizon.net no later than May 31st.

The ceremony at South Park is conducted annually to properly retire and honor flags that have become worn and unserviceable from flying as representation of our country. Elected officials, girl scout troops, veterans’ and community groups, among others, have also been invited.

Community Day Wrap-Up

A message from Cubmaster Rick:

We had about 20 boys march in the parade at Community Day. (Special thanks to our recent Webelos alums who marched with us as well!) Watch it when it runs on the USC cable station. We got a little scrunched up with the group in front of us, but all in all it went well.

We will plan on doing it again next year, and hope to see an even better turnout!

{last} Community Day reminder

Sorry for the third (and hopefully final) notice...we've been asked to remind Cubs to wear their uniforms for tomorrow's parade!

Be at the upper stadium parking lot between 10:45 and 11:00am on Saturday. Use the Truxton entrance (neighborhood side of the stadium).

We are #20 in the parade order. It is possible that will change, but that's where we are for now. Either way, look for the blue banner or Mr. Lang.

We will need two boys - or a couple of teams of two, to carry the banner. Webelos will be given the first option on that.

Wear comfortable shoes for the walk, and dress for the weather, which currently calls for mostly sunny and 79 degrees!

Parents - after the parade you can either meet your scout back in the parking lot or we will walk in groups back down to the Old Rec Center area. Please let us know when you check in which you intend on doing so we don't lose any Scouts! They will not be released until they are picked up by a family member and checked out with a leader.

The parade isn't very long - about a mile, and should be fun. Lots of people will see us, and we'll be on TV as well, so it is important to Do Your Best for the community to see.

See you there!

Rain Rain Go Away - Saturday is Playground Clean-up Day!

This coming Saturday is our almost-annual spring cleanup of the playground at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The scouts and adults clean up the leaves, the areas and the toys!

Date: Saturday, May 7
Time: 9am-12 or 1pm (depending on number of people!)
Where: Westminster Presbyterian Church playground

Come prepared with work gloves, rakes, brooms and leaf blowers (all items labeled with name). Also be prepared with a towel or change of clothes - some water will be involved in cleaning off playground equipment and outside toys.

This is a great way to say "Thank You" to Westminster for allowing us to use their facilities for our Pack events.

Please let us know that you are coming!
