Winter Weekends at Heritage Reservation

Hi.
Winter Weekends at Heritage Reservation
Check out http://heritagereservation.org/winter/winterc.php for info and registration of winter weekends - sledding, hiking, more in the snow - with indoor eating/sleeping!

The available weekends are 1/14, 1/21, 2/11 and 2/18 (Fri PM to Sunday AM). FYI - 2/18 is also our Pinewood Derby.

We already have one parent-son team (Nick and Jeff D.) going on the 2/11 weekend if anyone else from the Pack wants to join in on that weekend - let cubscouts661@verizon.net know!

Pack Meeting; Monday December 12 & Rocket Info

Hi.
Reminder: Pack Meeting on Monday December 12, 7pm in Fellowship Hall.

Rockets
Since the fall camping trip, some of you have asked for info about the rockets that we built and launched at Elson Farm (thinking about Christmas ideas maybe???).
Here's the scoop.
We've used Estes brand rocket kits. Over the years, we've found that "level 0"-beginner- are the best for the grade-school age kids as the level 1/2/3 kits require more precise gluing (and patience).
You can get kits at hobby shops; usually less than $10/kit and in the $20 range for a launching set. I've occasionally seen them at Kmart/Walmart also.
If you are looking for bulk, the Pack buys mail-order from AC Supply (http://www.acsupplyco.com/estes/estese2x.htm).
If you are looking to buy a kit or two/launch pad, please do not buy engines! Check with cubscouts661@verizon.net as we have a significant number in stock from recent canceled trips!
Please let us know if you have any other questions about the rockets; the kids did enjoy them at the farm this year.

Popcorn is in; Please come get it !

An Update from the Popcorn Kernel

Thank you to all the Parents and Scouts that have picked up popcorn. I still have about 15-20 orders in my garage. I would really appreciate it if all the orders were picked up todoay (Friday November 11th) between 6-8pm so that I didn't have to move them to the multi-purpose room on Saturday. Not only could I park in my garage again but I would also have Saturday free.

Thanks

Update from the Popcorn Kernel

An update from the Pack 661 Popcorn Kernel

Thanks to all the Scouts and Parents for making this years popcorn sale a success. I am finishing up the entry of the orders this evening and it looks like we are on track to have about $15,000 in sales again this year. That means we are eligible to have our popcorn delivered. I will send out another update when I find out more of what that will look like.

I have had a lot of order forms that didn't have a gift card selection on them. If your Scout is eligible for a gift card but forgot to mark it on their sheet, you still have time to give me a call. If I don't hear from you by Tuesday evening October 25th then your Scout will get a WalMart card.

Thanks so much

On a personal note (many of you who were at the pool party and signed the get-well card), Matt P sent an e-mail today that was full of great news! The tests indicate that the surgery was successful and he said that he is doing well and excited to get back to "normal." The docs suggested that a good recuperative method would be for Matt to volunteer for more leadership areas in the Pack. We are so glad to hear that he is doing well and that he is going to be even more of a go-to guy! (Sorry Matt - had to put that bit in there!)

Day Camp, New Scouts & Flag Retirement...

Hi,
All indications at this stage once again mark this to be a great week of Day Camp. 31 Cubs from Pack 661 joined in with 170+ Cubs from other Packs in the South Hills to enjoy five days of archery, BBs, sports, crafts and yes, a fair amount of WATER activities. Thanks to the adults who joined in each day to help the boys move through the day. A huge thanks, the biggest of all, to Colleen P. for her fantastic leadership once again this year. Colleen has been our go-to leader for Day Camp for quite a few years now and each year just gets bigger and better.

Looking for some new Scouts!
Please forward this e-mail along to anyone that you might know with a son entering first grade. ...
Our new Tiger Dens are forming and we hope to get rolling with activities in {late} July or early August. Already, we have six boys from Baker, two from Eisenhower and one from Streams; nine new Tiger Cubs!
Those interested are encouraged to visit http://cubscouts661.blogspot.com and fill out the "Interested..." link in the yellow highlighted upper right-hand section!

Flag Retirement
For the Webelos Heritage camping trip in mid-July, we are exploring having a flag retirement ceremony. If you have a flag that is worn or torn that needs a proper salute, please e-mail cubscouts661@verizon.net and we will include.

Thanks
Have a safe and reflective Independence Day

Pool Party, Planning and more planning...

It's back!
After a one year hiatus, the almost-annual Pack 661 Swim Party is now {back} on the schedule!
Save the date:
Saturday August 20, 2011..Evening
Montclair neighborhood pool.
Stay tuned for more details as the summer unfolds.

Planning and more planning...
It's time to plan our schedule of events for our next year of Scouting. This is where we need you to come out with ideas and dates for September and beyond.
At this point, we need someone to host a gathering or two during this summer for the planning of next year's calendar. When you host, you get to pick the dates of the meetings!
Contact cubscouts661@verizon.net if you want to host this year's gathering (usually five or so people...we'd love to have more tune in!).

Den Leaders....please get your calendar out and choose your den meeting dates (it's so hard to look that far ahead...). Please send dates and room requests to cubscouts661@verizon.net so that Joyce can schedule rooms at Westminster.

Flag Retirement Ceremony & Community Day Wrap-up

Flag Retirement Ceremony
Thursday June 9 1pm South Park

A special message:
Allegheny County Council Members invite Boy Scout Troops from the South Hills area to attend the 2011 Flag Retirement Ceremony on Thursday, June 9th, at 1:00 p.m. at South Park’s Flag Retirement Plaza located behind the Children’s Theatre in South Park.

The ceremony’s agenda will mirror last year’s event, running from 30 to 45 minutes and including speeches from elected officials, performances by vocalists and instrumentalists, and a presentation of flags. We invite scouts to participate in the event; they may be utilized to prepare and execute the ceremony (i.e. raising flags on flag poles, presenting flags to be retired, escorting disabled veterans to seats, handing out programs, etc.).

We request that those interested in participating please RSVP to cubscouts661@verizon.net no later than May 31st.

The ceremony at South Park is conducted annually to properly retire and honor flags that have become worn and unserviceable from flying as representation of our country. Elected officials, girl scout troops, veterans’ and community groups, among others, have also been invited.

Community Day Wrap-Up

A message from Cubmaster Rick:

We had about 20 boys march in the parade at Community Day. (Special thanks to our recent Webelos alums who marched with us as well!) Watch it when it runs on the USC cable station. We got a little scrunched up with the group in front of us, but all in all it went well.

We will plan on doing it again next year, and hope to see an even better turnout!

{last} Community Day reminder

Sorry for the third (and hopefully final) notice...we've been asked to remind Cubs to wear their uniforms for tomorrow's parade!

Be at the upper stadium parking lot between 10:45 and 11:00am on Saturday. Use the Truxton entrance (neighborhood side of the stadium).

We are #20 in the parade order. It is possible that will change, but that's where we are for now. Either way, look for the blue banner or Mr. Lang.

We will need two boys - or a couple of teams of two, to carry the banner. Webelos will be given the first option on that.

Wear comfortable shoes for the walk, and dress for the weather, which currently calls for mostly sunny and 79 degrees!

Parents - after the parade you can either meet your scout back in the parking lot or we will walk in groups back down to the Old Rec Center area. Please let us know when you check in which you intend on doing so we don't lose any Scouts! They will not be released until they are picked up by a family member and checked out with a leader.

The parade isn't very long - about a mile, and should be fun. Lots of people will see us, and we'll be on TV as well, so it is important to Do Your Best for the community to see.

See you there!

Scouting For Food & other service opportunities

Help Needed with Scouting For Food: Community Service - giving back to the community - is a big part of the scouting mission. Scouting for Food is scouting's big community service effort. Please consider assisting with this effort. Not a lot of time is required - a half hour of your scout's time. Here is what is needed: 1. Hand out bags for the collection of food goods at the end of services at Westminster Church this Sunday, April 10. Services are at 8:30 AM, 9:45 AM, and 11 AM. Plan to come in uniform about 30 minutes after start of services to be available to hand out bags as members leave services. We currently have no one to help with the 8:30 AM service, and could still use more help at the other two. Joyce B. will be available to provide the bags for us. 2. Food goods will need to be collected before the start of services at Westminster Church the next Sunday, April 17 at all three services. Plan to arrive in uniform, 20 - 30 minutes before start of services and stay about 10 minutes after for stragglers and to pack items in boxes. This is a day we truly need your help. All those able to help, please contact Joyce at burton3363@verizon.net or contact your den leader to let her/him know when you can help. Now for scouts Scouting For Food. Den leaders have been informed of availability of Scouting For Food bags for scouts to pass out to their neighbors or family. Pass these bags out along with some information as to when you will pick them up. Just bring the items you pick up from family/neighbors to our Blue & Gold Banquet next Saturday April 16. We'll collect your items when you come in! Extra community service hours available for those interested in packing up those items! Not to mention the good feeling in helping those in need. Another "hold that date" service op - Westminster playground clean-up Saturday, May 7th at 9 AM. Come prepared with work gloves, rakes, brooms and leaf blowers (all items labeled with name). Also be prepared with a towel or change of clothes - some water will be involved in cleaning off playground equipment and outside toys. We hope many of you will help with this project. It's our way of saying "Thank You" to Westminster Church for allowing us to use their facilities for all of our Pack events. Thank you in advance for giving of your time and resources as we give back to our community!

Blue & Gold Banquet April 16

Blue & Gold Banquet is on Saturday April 16 at 4 PM Westminster Church Fellowship Hall If you have not already sent in your RSVP for your scout's family, you may still do so - and we urge you to do so soon. Either mail the response card to Colleen - or you can drop it off at her house - she has a milk box on her front porch that you can drop it into. A response is helpful even if you are unable to attend. To those of you who responded already - Thank You!

Late March Pack Update

Please note - there will be no April Pack Meeting. We hope to see you at the Blue & Gold Banquet on Saturday April 16th! There is a lot of information in this update - so please read through carefully. Spring is traditionally a busy time on the scouting schedule and you won't want to miss any of it! Blue & Gold Banquet Saturday April 16 at Westminster Church Fellowship Hall starting at 4 PM: Invitations have been mailed and require an RSVP. The advancement program will start at 4 PM and will be followed by the dinner. Both events will be in Fellowship Hall this year. We ask that scouts wear their "dress blues". If you have not received an invitation or have any questions, please contact Beth at cubscouts661@verizon.net. Scouting For Food in April: This is an annual service project for scouting and we've had the support of our sponsor, Westminster Church in facilitating this. We are asking all scouts (and a parent) to give one hour of their time at some point during this drive. We will need scouts to do one of the following: - distribute bags after each service at Westminster Church on Sunday April 10th (8:30 AM, 9:45 AM, 11 AM - 5 scouts/parents each service) - collect bags at Westminster Church on Sunday April 17th before the 8:30 AM and 9:45 AM services (5 scouts/parents each service) - collect before the 11 AM service on Sunday April 17th and begin to sort/package goods (11 scouts/parents needed this service) In addition, scouts will be given bags to pass along to family & friends to fill. This will come from each den leader once the bags arrive. Any goods collected by the scouts can be brought to the Blue & Gold Banquet. So here is another opportunity for 11 other scouts/parents before and immediately after the Banquet to collect and sort goods brought by fellow scouts. Scheduling will be done through den leaders - more info to follow. Contact Joyce at burton3363@verizon.net with any questions. Camping opportunities: A lot of information came your way late last week about camping opportunities. You should have received two notices about camping. One covered general information about both day camp and Heritage over-night camps for cub scouts. The second was directly from Colleen P. with more detailed information about Day Camp. She spells out the answers to many of your questions. To minimize confusion - anyone registering for South Park Day Camp should send all required information to Colleen at the address indicated on the Day Camp post instead of sending to the Council Office or registering on-line. Save the Date: Two events that we mentioned last month, deserve to be mentioned again - so save the dates and check back on the blog for more information to come. - Pack 661 Elson Farm Campout - May 13 - 15 - USC Community Day Parade - Saturday May 21 around 11 AM starting at the USCHS parking lot Recruiting Tiger Cubs (and any other interested potential scouts!): Do you know any "K" boys interested in scouting? Jeff Devlin has started to recruit for Tiger Cubs and would like to get dens set up and summer activities planned for incoming cubs. For info and to sign up for the new cub mailing list - have prospective cub parents go to : http://cubscouts661.blogspot.com Email Updates: Do you know of any cub scout families who are not getting these updates sent out at least monthly? Have you changed your email. Have you "graduated" out of the pack and want to be removed from the mailing list? All of these are reasons to contact us with updates. Send an email to cubscouts661@verizon.net with your update. Outdoor Classroom Activities: The Outdoor Classroom, formerly known as the REEC, regularly schedules classes that pertain to various requirements/advancements our scouts plan to earn. Some classes are specific to cub scouts (This Saturday is a cub scouting program focused on the Wetlands and includes a 3 mile hike.) These activities can be scheduled as a pack or den - or can be done as an individual. For more information, contact Jessica Stombaugh Kester, program manager at Jessica@TheOutdoorClassroomPA.org.

Important Pack Updates For This Week

This Sunday, Scout Sunday - Scouts Help Needed:

Sunday, February 13, 2011, is Scout Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church. It is important to Troop 366 that our pack participate in this event visibly considering the Church has supported the Troop for over 50 years. We are looking for 4 Scouts with at least one parent to attend the 8:30 service (arrive a little early). We are looking for 5-7 Scouts and 1-2 adults to attend the 11 am service. Past experience is that we will help to pass out the service bulletins and collect the offering. The Scouts may then attend the service. I understand many families have another church they regularly attend, but helping celebrate “A Scout is Reverent” in the Charter Organization service once a year is important to the Troop, the Scout, and to Scouting. Please consider how you could adjust your schedules to help out at one of these services on the 13th. Contact either Rick at rnrdiff@comcast.net or ricklang1@msn.com if you can assist by Friday February 11.

Adult Help is Needed to "Help the Pack Go" for the 2011/2012 school :
The following positions are needed within our pack for the next school year. Most are defined to a certain time period, though some have a degree of flexibility. You can contact either Rick at their emails listed above for more info, or contact our pack email (cubscouts661@verizon.net) to have your questions directed to the current chair. Open positions include: Assistant Cubmaster, Popcorn Kernal; Pinewood Derby; Cub Fun Day; Summer Camp; Secretary/Emails; Scouting for Food.

Updates from Monday's Pack Meeting:
Pinewood Derby: If you have any questions about the dimensions of your scouts derby car, there should be a paper outlining them in the box the model came in. Additional questions, you could refer to the googledoc on our blog (from 2010) which may be helpful to you.
-Car numbers - will be assigned Friday evening and will be placed on your vehicle for you.
-Friday night weigh-in - Come anytime between 5 - 9 PM. Come in on the earlier side if you think your car may need any modifications.
-Race Day -The action starts at 9 AM at Westminster Church Fellowship Hall. Tigers and Wolfs will start their races and when they're done, the Bears and Webelos will race - so these guys may want to be there a little before 10 AM. There will be a short break between the two sets for voting for design prizes(most scouting, most patriotic, most creative and funniest). If you can't make it, as long as your car has been checked in on Friday night, it will race. While there on Saturday, scouts should be sure to get their "license", patch and other goodies.
-District Races - This is open to all scouts and will be on Saturday March 12, cost for participation is $7.50. If you'd like more info, ask at the race.
May Community Day Parade: Our pack is planning to march, will you join us? Community Day will be on Saturday May 21 at 11 AM. More info to follow.
Spring Pack Camp Trip: Plans are underway for this fun family campout. Once dates are confirmed for May, we'll pass along the info.
